Vegas was definitely a contradiction - the wows from the massive hotels and the Grand Canyon, then the seedier side at night when it felt more like Blackpool. Just watching the rides at the top of the Stratosphere made my stomach do somersaults - god knows how you get the nerve to actually go on one!
Lots of people rave about Turkey but the thought of it just leaves me cold for some reason.
India and Africa have also long been top of the not interested list.

What did you expect Vegas to be like? I mean, it's like Ronseal. Does exactly what it says on the tin.
Yeah you are right Trunds mate... maybe if I started my trip there I might have enjoyed it more... but went there at end of holiday after visiting National Parks galore and camping in Yosemite and having a lodge on the Grand canyon rim... so for me I wanted to get back out into the open spaces again... whereas my daughter had enough... and absolutely loved Vegas... however the show we saw (Jabberwockeyz dance troop... which shit all over Diversity for me) in the MGM Grand was very very good.... I'd probably enjoy it a lot more with MATES

There is no such thing as missing the boat re Thailand. If you like good food and drink (at ridiculously low cost), weather and plenty of culture you will love it.

I've been loads. I wouldn't go there for more than 4 days though as it does get a bit samey. That and my liver normally needs dialysis.

Vegas flip flopped between Wow and Whooah and woe.
I enjoyed it for what it was but wouldn't hurry back.

I'd never been to Las Vegas until last year and having been there for 2 days, I never want to go again
Yup same here Chigwell... had 4 days there... that was enough... very very surreal place... deffo not for me.

Mainly places that life is pretty cheap and they eat dogs...

Walking in the canyons in LA is great. It’s typical USA, lots of shit loads of really great stuff. Brilliant bars and clubs if you find the right ones. Probably not a place I’d go for a holiday but a great place to be.

Been to CAL 5 times... love LA... some places are edgy as fuck but I like that.. only real place felt Hmmmm this is interesting was Inglewood... but just like London and any other big city you have your bad bits and your good bits... Hollywood Boulevard it's just the theatres, wax works and the walk of fame... 3 or 4 hours tops... then round the corner you have the brilliant views from the Griffith Observatory... great views of the City and the Hollywood sign.... loved all round Universal City and the Hollywood Bowl... Beverley Hills etc.. you can see loads in 4 or 5 days... beaches... especially if you are into the Surf scene are up there with anything around.. Huntington, Malibu, Long Beach, Sanat Monica, Redondo... all brilliant days out. I'd say we have stayed in the LA area for nigh on a month (we use it as a starting point before going South to Sand Diego or North to Monterey, Yosemite, San Fran etc) and never have had a bad day ... people have been superb... even the drugged up crack heads in Inglewood !!

On the flip side, I have found Sri Lanka to be under rated by UK holiday makers and I loved it there.

I'd never been to Las Vegas until last year and having been there for 2 days, I never want to go again. However, the canyon and desert areas nearby are amazing.

Australia is high on my list of places to go, but I get the impression you need at least a month to make it worthwhile. I have dogs, so it isn't practical to leave when with a sitter or in a kennel for that amount of time.
And I'm with those who have enjoyed SE Asia. Been to Thailand twice. Once for my honeymoon and another with some mates and both times I had an amazing time. I will say though, I'm not a big fan of Bangkok for more than a few days. We'll be going back around April (COVID-19 dying off assuming) combining it with Vietnam.

What is even more disturbing is the Australians you meet in Europe are by and large the open-minded outward looking ones who have actually travelled abroad.
Some of the ones who only want to stay in Australia would struggle to accept the values of the 1950s...

Australia gets a massive swerve from me which is down to the fact that 90% of Aussies I've met in Europe aren't very nice people and are arrogant in particular. Perhaps the only thing that might get me to go is to watch a cricket test series.
SE Asia is the most amazing place to go on holiday. Its quite remarkable that so many here think that is all about sex tourism. Actually if it means the place doesn't get even more overrun / expensive I'm fine with that.

Downtown LA is exactly as you describe. I turned on my heels and left within an hour.
Luckily we were staying in Beverly Hills (after a cruise) and used the HOHO buses to visit Santa Monica and Hollywood felt more in my comfort zone there.

Went to Kissimmee, once of he worst holidays i've ever had. Will never go back to the US
